3 poppies
It never ceases to amaze how the wafer thin petals of a poppy manage to withstand the elements - it has both fragility and resilience and is a joy to see growing wild in the hedgerows and cultivated in gardens. It is one of my favourites.
Symbolising consolation, remembrance and hope for the future. In the UK they represent all those who lost their lives in active service whilst serving their country.
I wanted to do this glorious flower proud and made every petal out of clay so that I could overlap them to create a very definite 3D impression. The stem, leaves, buds and seed pods were also constructed from clay and everything was hand painted.
The canvas base in a fluid combination of various shades of blue, bronze and grey, sits comfortably with the red and green of the poppies. When it came to assembly, in true Carole style, I took the poppies over the edge of the canvas.
Acrylic on stretched canvas 20 × 50 × 1.5cm with resin finish.
