Sunflower
There can’t be anyone alive that doesn’t love sunflowers! These massive globes of sunshine bring joy to all with eyes to see.
Symbolising strength, good fortune, admiration and loyalty, sunflowers are heliotropic - they follow the sun as it moves across the sky.
I wanted to do this glorious flower proud and made every petal out of clay so that I could layer the petals individually and create a very definite 3D impression. The central section was textured to depict the seeds beneath. The stem, leaves and small leaf projections were also constructed from clay and everything was hand painted.
The canvas base was fun as I first added some filigree texture and gesso before applying darker greens at the bottom, and sky blue at the top. Touches of brown, burnt sienna, green and gold were added to suggest the grasses and plant growth around the sunflower. When it came to assembly, in true Carole style, I took the sunflower over the edge of the canvas.
Acrylic on stretched canvas 20 × 50 × 1.5cm with resin finish.
