We all know that bees play a vital role in our ecosystem and are essential for sustaining our food supply so it seemed only right that I should honour them.

Here we have a bee constructed entirely from clay, hand painted and resined. The wings are created from paper thin translucent clay and given a hint of pearlescent colour - I was particularly pleased with them! In most cases I envisage the composition in its entirety right at the start of a project, but in this case I made the bee and spent some time pondering about where it should rest. Honeycomb was the answer - but not just any honeycomb - this honeycomb is made from varying shades of metal leaf - an opulent palace indeed for this very special resident.

Metal leaf on 30.5mm square 1.5cm depth stretched canvas. Hand painted clay bee with resin finish.
