Sweet Peas
I adore sweet peas - a glorious tangle of fragrant colourful flowers that appear so delicate and fragile but cling on and keep giving their glory.
I think the memory of the very challenging Hampton Court freesia creation must have receded somewhat in order for me to embark on a similar adventure.
Working with florist tape and wire was a whole new experience for me and Iike all experiences we grow and learn from them. Despite me being a novice I am really thrilled with how this came out. The flowers, buds, leaves and calyx were crafted from clay, hand painted and cunningly attached to the stem along with the curly tendrils. The canvas base was painted fluid style in a palette to sit well with the flowers resulting in a beautifully fresh creation. For the butterfly I used translucent clay rolled paper thin to indicate its delicacy before the highly detailed application of translucent paint to each section of the wings. The bee required strong magnification, fine tweezers, and bags of patience - its wings also constructed from translucent clay with a tint of near transparent pearl paint. Once assembled and positioned on canvas the flowers and entire surface were resined to provide strength and durability.
Acrylic on stretched canvas 40cm square 1.5cm depth. Wire stems and tendrils, clay flowers, buds and leaves all hand painted and individually resined.
