Communing with nature
I had a strong desire to paint a gracefully nude woman, capturing her softness and femininity through delicate flesh and pink tones. To create a striking contrast against her smooth skin, I chose a deep black background, adding elegant gold leaf strands to her hair for a touch of luminosity.
Yet, once my figure was complete, I realised something was missing—she couldn’t simply be floating in space. She needed to be lying on something, and that’s when I decided to venture into texture, an exciting but unfamiliar territory for me!
My first attempt with plaster was a disaster, so I took a different approach, using fabric infused with a stiffening agent. This allowed me to drape, fold, and shape the material naturally around her body. To ensure a perfect fit, I even created a template of her curved form before setting the fabric in place. The result? A beautifully sculpted sheet that extended beyond the canvas edge, adding an extra dimension to the piece.
I painted the fabric in charcoal and black, highlighting the raised folds with gold, which complemented the composition perfectly. To bring even more depth and a touch of colour, I adorned the sheet with roses and placed a delicate butterfly in her hand—a final, thoughtful flourish.
This painting was a true creative triumph, and I’m absolutely thrilled with the outcome. Those who follow my work know how much I love to push artistic boundaries, and this piece is no exception—it’s completely one-of-a-kind! The photographs don’t do it justice, especially with the challenges of capturing a resined surface on black without glare or reflections. If you're intrigued and would like to see it in person, please get in touch!
